With built-in wireless controls, the heat pumps operate autonomously under kepSmart’s Intelligent AI Energy Efficiency Software, which removes manual control from the occupant to ensure consistent, efficient operation.

Whether in heating or cooling mode, the system manages the building holistically—coordinating unit activity to eliminate overcooling or overheating and maintaining balanced, comfortable conditions throughout. It also incorporates short- and medium-term weather forecasts (1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-hour intervals) to anticipate environmental changes and proactively adjust operation.

As the system runs, it continuously learns the thermal characteristics of each space—tracking how long it takes to raise or lower the temperature by a degree—and refines its strategy using both indoor response data and external weather trends. While kepSmart’s Intelligent Heat Pumps are designed for year-round operation, their most common application is during the heating season. Certain users—such as universities and commercial buildings—may choose to operate the system year-round, but most interest centers around replacing or supplementing traditional heating systems in multifamily buildings, co-ops, and condominiums.

Historically, many property owners have been hesitant to adopt heat pumps due to concerns about their performance during extreme cold. In addition, utility incentives often required full furnace decommissioning to avoid simultaneous system operation, raising fears of increased energy use. The high cost of split systems, along with complex installations and power demands, placed these solutions out of reach for many.
